FSSAI: Building a Compliance-First Food Business

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) regulate the manufacture, storage, distribution, sale, and import of food products to ensure they are safe for human consumption.

Cost Audit

Determining Your License Category

  • FSSAI registration is strictly based on the capacity and turnover of your business. Getting this wrong can lead to "Unlicensed Operation" penalties. As of April 1, 2026, the thresholds have been updated to reflect the modern economic landscape.
  • The "Automatic Central" Rule: Certain businesses go straight to Central License, regardless of turnover. This includes all Importers/Exporters, E-commerce Platforms (Zomato/Swiggy or D2C sites), and units operating at Airports or Seaports.
  • Multi-State Rule: If you have outlets in two or more states, your Head Office must hold a Central License, while each unit holds its respective State/Basic license.
  • Penalty for Mismatch: Operating under a "Basic" registration when your turnover exceeds ₹1.5 Crore can lead to fines up to ₹5,00,000 and instant delisting from food delivery apps.

The 2026 "Clean Label" Compliance

FSSAI has updated its standards for 2026 to focus on transparency:

Front-of-Pack Labelling (FOPL)

Ensuring your packaging correctly displays "High in Salt/Sugar/Fat" warnings if applicable.

FSMS Plan

We draft your mandatory Food Safety Management System plan, outlining how you manage hygiene, pest control, and temperature logs.

Nomination of Person

Every company must now nominate a "Qualified Person" responsible for food safety. We handle the legal documentation for this appointment.

The Registration Workflow on FoSCoS

We move your application through the digital pipeline:

1

Eligibility Check

We analyze your production capacity (MT per day) and turnover to pick the right tier.

2

Documentation

Preparing the Form B, Blueprint of the premises, List of Equipment, and Water Analysis Reports.

3

Inspection Support

If the department schedules a physical inspection, we provide a Pre-Audit Checklist to ensure your premises meets Schedule 4 hygiene standards.

4

License Grant

Once approved, you receive a 14-digit FSSAI Number which must be displayed on all packaging.

Post-Licensing Responsibilities

Annual Returns

Manufacturers and Importers must file Form D-1 by 31st May every year.

Product Testing:

Mandatory semi-annual testing of food products through NABL-accredited labs.

Modification Filings

We help you update your license if you add a new food category (e.g., adding "Health Supplements" or "Organic" lines).
